The combination of massive corruption and extreme cartel violence/lawlessness in Mexico, plus logistic limitations (trains cannot replace a single large container ship) - for me, this project will never threaten the Panama Canal. BUT, it may serve a number of intermediate functions that don't require direct coast-coast transport and trans-shipment (unload/reload). Even then, the investment is huge, and we know it will overrun budget before it starts.
